BACTEC 9050 (Becton Dickinson, USA)

System Analyzers
Identification of microorganisms in patients’ blood is of high diagnostic importance. Blood culture incubation is substantially important to diagnose and determine etiological agents of sepsis. Bacterial sepsis is one of the gravest infection diseases, therefore prompt detection and identification of pathogenic microorganisms in blood is an important function for microbiological diagnostics lab.

BACTEC 9050 is designed for quick detection of bacteria and fungi in clinical blood samples. Blood samples are extracted from patients and placed in special bottles, containing microbiological broth. Bottles are then placed into the device, preferably immediately, for more effective isolation of microorganisms. Microorganisms, present in the blood sample, start to metabolize nutrients of the broth, emanating CO2. Special paint on bottle’s sensor interacts with CO2. This modulates a glow, absorbed by fluorescent material of the sensor. Device’s photo detectors measure fluorescence level, corresponding to the amount of CO2 emitted by microorganisms, which allows to identify them. Microbial count is taken every 10 minutes by recurring fluorescence readings in the bottle with nutrient broth and tested sample.

Possibility to diagnose sepsis in very short time – 90% of positive results are obtained within the first day. Maximal time of study is five days by protocol.

Besides nutrient broth, bottles contain special additives neutralizing antibiotics, which allows to diagnose bacteremia in patients even after antibiotics therapy. Bottle contents also include additives for blood leucocytes lysis and release of phagocyted microorganisms.

The device operates bar-coded test tubes excluding the necessity for manual processing and minimizes human factor errors. Bar code scanner is located inside the instrument to activate coded commands and search labels to identify a sample.

Productivity

Simultaneous analysis of 50 samples, possibility to load 5-10 new samples daily. Maximal number of studies per year – 3,600.

Amount of blood required to test one sample is 8 ml for adults and 3 ml for kids.
